The 2024 International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) has once again revealed the cream of the crop in the world of Scotch whisky. This year, 13 exceptional Scotch whiskies scored 98 points or higher, earning the prestigious Gold Outstanding medals. Among these, three outstanding blended Scotch whiskies stood out, showcasing the remarkable craftsmanship and diversity within the category.

A Glimpse into the IWSC

The IWSC, founded in 1969 by Anton Massel, has grown into one of the most respected wine and spirits competitions globally. Spirits are evaluated on a 100-point scale, with Gold Outstanding medals awarded to those scoring 98-100 points. This year, out of approximately 4,000 entries, 102 received Gold Outstanding medals. Here, we delve into the top three blended Scotch whiskies that captivated the judges with their exceptional quality.

The Top Blended Scotch Whiskies of 2024

1. Johnnie Walker High Rye Blended Scotch Whisky

  • ABV: 40%
  • Volume: 750 ml

The Johnnie Walker High Rye Blended Scotch Whisky, introduced in 2021, has quickly become a favorite. This lightly peated blend includes a significant portion of rye in its mash bill, setting it apart from traditional Scotch whiskies. The high rye content imparts a spicy and robust character, blending seamlessly with the signature smoothness of Johnnie Walker. The flavor profile boasts notes of apples, caramel, cinnamon, clove, and a distinctive peppery finish.

IWSC Tasting Notes: "Treacle toffee aromas swirled with subtle smoke textures give complexity on the palate with well-integrated characters and an elegant sweetness on the finish, offering a delightful all-rounded mouthfeel."

2. Wildmoor Rugged Coast 30 YO Blended Scotch Whisky

  • ABV: 42%
  • Volume: 750 ml

Crafted by Master Blender Brian Kinsman for William Grant & Sons, the Wildmoor Rugged Coast 30 YO is a premium expression inspired by Scotland’s rugged western coastline. This blend of peated and unpeated single malts, aged for at least 30 years and finished in Oloroso Sherry casks, delivers a rich and layered flavor profile.

IWSC Tasting Notes: "Fantastically harmonious and well-balanced, offering plenty of attractive cask spice, dried fruits, and beautifully subtle smoky tones. A rich, smooth palate follows, packed full of complex flavors of Manuka honey, candied pecans, and Medjool dates, before a gloriously long finish. An exceptional example of its kind."

3. Grant’s Triple Wood Blended Scotch Whisky

  • ABV: 40%
  • Volume: 750 ml

Another masterpiece by Brian Kinsman for William Grant & Sons, Grant’s Triple Wood Blended Scotch Whisky is defined by its maturation process in three different types of casks: virgin oak, American oak, and refill bourbon casks. This unique approach imparts robust, spicy notes, subtle vanilla, caramel flavors, and a well-balanced, smooth finish.

IWSC Tasting Notes: "A harmonious blend of sweet pear, balanced by a touch of smoke. Layers of mixed nuts add complexity, while a citrus fruitiness enhances the overall experience with a persistent length."
